CAPTAIN ALATRISTE TAVERN (MADRID)

alatriste

It is a tavern that opened at the end of 2006. The name, naturally, comes from the novel by Arturo Pérez Reverte, of whom I am one of the millions of admirers.

Félix Colomo, from Navalcarnero like me, and also the owner of the Cuevas de Luis Candelas, asked Pérez Reverte for permission to use the name and it seems that he granted it free of charge, without taking part financially.

alatristegIt is located where the novel places the Taberna del Turco, on San Bruno street, right in the heart of the Madrid of the Habsburgs. It is an 18th-century mansion, although the caves date from the 16th century (they have been a prison, an inn, a hospital and several other things besides).

The restoration has been exemplary and the original character has been respected as much as possible, with the restaurant divided into two floors.

The food is typical Madrid cuisine, with the Lebrijana-style migas, the lamb shank and the partridge particularly worth mentioning, the….the……., in other words, almost everything is delicious. It is typical 17th-century food, with the dishes named after names from the novel.

The service is decent.

You can visit the lower floor to see it, if you are non-smokers and are staying on the upper floor. You will find “remnants” of the stories of Captain Alatriste, and with a little imagination you can picture yourselves dining with the captain, Iñigo Balboa, Quevedo, and so on.

A place worth visiting, both for the quality of the food and for the setting; you will travel back to times gone by and feel immersed in the novel.

“He was not the most honest man nor the most pious, but he was a brave man…….”.

  • Average price: 45-50 euros
  • Recommendation: When you go in, ask where the restroom is, because you may end up in the kitchen (it happened to me).
  • Favorite dish: migas / warm pickled partridge
  • Address:
    Taberna del Capitán Alatriste
    Grafal 7 (on Cava Baja)
    Madrid

    Genial.
